Boulders Beach – near Cape Town, South Africa

If you like penguins, Boulders Beach which is located near Cape Town, South Africa is a MUST VISIT! 

African Penguins aka Jackass Penguins are considered endangered on IUCN’s Red list.  Overfishing, pollution, and lack of nesting locations are a few of the main contributors to their declining population.  However the African Penguins thankfully are plentiful at Boulders Beach colony.  

At Boulders Beach, there is a long boardwalk that weaves its way down to the water.  Along the path you may see a penguin or two here and there… which of course is exciting.  BUT once you reach the end of the boardwalk which is also overlooking the water, there will likely be too many penguins to count!  It is cute watching them run around, nap, and swim.  There are some informational signs at the end of the boardwalk, but be aware that it can get pretty crowded with tourists.  Boulders Beach is a fun place to stop – an hour or so will give time to take pictures and watch the penguins in their element.  However, one could easily spend a lot longer taking everything in.

While you’re in the area, Table Mountain is near by, and a popular place to visit.  Take note of their hours of operation though!  We pulled into the parking lot just as the last cable car departed for the day.  The weather also plays a factor in whether the cable cars will run or not, and we ran into that problem a different day.  So, I never made it to the top of Table Mountain, but it sure looks stunning!
