Needing a little getaway to avoid the upcoming winter blues? Having a hard time finding something unique to do that isn’t a “seasonal” activity? How about a trip to Shawano County, Wisconsin?
Here’s my itinerary for my two days & one night in Shawano County! You could easily mix and match to make a one day trip instead.
Start out the morning with a visit to the Menominee Cultural Museum and Logging Camp. (Note that the logging camp portion is seasonal) Unfortunately when we visited, even though both portions were scheduled to be open, we were unable to tour the museum (aside from the lobby). From what I could see it looked pretty neat, so I hope to go again in the future. Moral of the story though:
To prevent spending extra time and gas, be sure to call ahead to assure that the museums are open even if you plan to visit during normal hours.
After returning to Shawano, stop at Farm inn’ on Main for a bite to eat. The décor inside the restaurant is so cute, and has a nice country feel. The food is tasty, and we had great service! I ordered the Chili & Cheese (cup of chili and a grilled cheese sandwich), and my mom ordered the Smothered Veggie Burger. We were both stuffed after our meals, but the baked goods sure were tempting.
Next, take a drive from Shawano to Wittenberg (about 30 minutes away) to do a walking tour of the beautiful murals painted on area businesses.
After Wittenberg, head back to Shawano to do my #1 MUST VISIT attraction in Shawano: a trip to Twig’s Beverage! Twig’s has a fun little museum and awesome gift shop. Be sure to pick something up for yourself, and don’t forget gifts for those who couldn’t join you!
Wind down the day by exploring the shops in downtown Shawano. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from for dinner. Since we were wanting something fast, we ended up going to Subway which was very convenient.
Stay overnight at the Shawano Four Seasons Resort. Enjoy the indoor swimming pool and hot tub, as well as the exercise room and game room. And, if you book a King Suite with a fireplace, enjoy a relaxing evening with a remote controlled fire place in your room!
Start out with breakfast at the Shawano Four Seasons Resort Restaurant (6:30am – 2:00pm). (If you are a hotel guest, you get 25% off of breakfast)
Next, set out on a driving tour to see the barn quilts throughout the county!
Don’t forget to make your way to Gresham to see the barn quilts downtown too. Not much was open when I was visiting Gresham, but there was a gas station with a nice deli in it that had carry out lunch options.
With over 330 barn quilts in Shawano County, the beauty of the barn quilt driving tour is that you can make your journey as long or as short as you want! It’s a lot of fun spotting barn quilts along the drive.

Disclaimer: I received some “Chamber bucks” to spend on food etc. at local businesses while on my trip to Shawano County, and had a discounted rate for overnight accommodations. I picked my own itinerary based on suggestions from Shawano Country Tourism. All opinions are my own.
