Sanibel Island is one of my personal favorite places to visit. There are so many wonderful things to do there such as mastering the “Sanibel Stoop” while searching for seashells (I’m still waiting to find a junonia!), bicycling/walking/rollerblading on their great paths, viewing nature and wildlife, shopping, and enjoying the wide variety of restaurants.
The lighthouse is a fun place to visit. After walking around the lighthouse, it’s only a short walk over to the fishing pier, which is a great place to shell, and watch to see what the fishermen are catching.
The birds and other wildlife are gorgeous in Sanibel. We saw this double-crested cormorant while shelling one morning. But, also love going to Ding Darling to see the wildlife. They have an excellent learning center, and for a very minimal price you can bike, walk, or drive your car down Wildlife Drive (but plan ahead, because it’s closed on Fridays). You can also take a tram tour, which is cool too, as the guide talks about the wildlife and you get off the tram a few times along the way to check things out. I’ve had fun touring Ding Darling all of those different ways, and try to get there at least once each time I visit the island.
I’m not an early morning person, but in Sanibel, everything changes! Sunrise and low tide are a high priority to me, so I try most days to set my alarm early and get up for that. And, of course, I love the sunsets there to!
Sanibel Island is such a beautiful place, full of charm, and I simply don’t have enough positive things to say about it. I’m sure I’ll be positing more about specific places in Sanibel in the future, but will leave it at this for now :)
