Venice, FL – Shark teeth!

This past January, while on vacation in Florida with my family, my husband & I ventured out to Caspersen Beach in Venice in search of shark teeth.  We invested in  sifting rakes from a toy store, and went with high hopes of finding a megalodon tooth.  Though, being more realistic we knew we’d be happy if we found a couple smaller, more common teeth!

We ended up buying one sifter with the wire basket and wooden handle (pictured above).  We also bought a sifter with a hard plastic basket and metal pole handle.  Ideally the basket sifter would have been larger, but the store was out of that size, so we made it work.  We found the wire basket easier to see what you found, but it got clogged with debris and shells between the wire and the sides.  The wood handle got uncomfortable to hold with wet hands, and started splintering a little bit.  Next time, I would try wrapping the handle to prevent that.  The plastic basket didn’t let as much sunlight in and was harder to see what you scooped up, but I thought was nicer to hold.  Both had pros and cons, but overall they were great and did what they were supposed to!

Our finds!

The sifters were really nice to use for shelling the rest of the week also.

The photo quality is low, but we found some neat teeth.  (And, tons of things that looked like teeth but were just rocks when we sorted through them later.)

This is not the sifter we bought, but looks interesting!  (affiliate)
