Day 5 Itinerary – Traveling along the Ring Road!

Breakfast at the Airbnb (Holmur Hornafjordur)

  • Breakfast was included with our stay!  Quick, easy, & tasty breakfast buffet.  With the cost of food out in Iceland, I really liked when we could find an Airbnb that included it.

Coffee shop

  • Stop off for pastries & coffee at a cute little café that had a self-service N1 station.
  • I can’t remember the name of this place, but the people were very friendly, and they had an area with handmade gifts for sale.
  • **If you know the name of this lmk, so I can update this post, it was a great stop off!

Cafe Iceland - Ring Road

Diamond Beach

  • ~35 minute drive from Holmur
  • There are parking lots on both sides of the bridge for this attraction.
  • Definitely worth a stop!  You will see pieces of old glacial ice washed up on the beach, and they glisten like diamonds.
  • Wander around awhile, or make it a quick visit for a few pictures. (we stayed about 15-20 minutes)

Skaftafell National Park

  • ~45 minute drive from Diamond Beach (we spent about 1 1/2 hours here)
  • Great stop to stretch your legs!  There are a couple different trails – depending on the weather, and how much time you have can determine your day.
  • We didn’t have as much time, and it had been raining a lot lately, so we took the path to the edge of the glacier (the S-1 Trail)
  • This was a nice, pretty clear cut hiking path with great views (a long stretch of the start of the path was actually paved).
  • The S-2 trail to Svartifoss sounded pretty too, but we didn’t have time to do both (we will have to go back!), there are several other trails available depending on your ability.

Hiking Skaftafellsjokull - Ring Road - Iceland

Hiking Skaftafellsjokull - Ring Road - Iceland

Sólheimasandur plane wreckage

  • **If time/weather permits**
  • ~2 hours from Skaftafell National Park
  • US Navy airplane which crashed in 1973 – All of the crew survived, but the plane remains on the beach
  • Originally I planned to visit the wreckage, but it would have required several hours to see, and we simply didn’t have the time with our other plans.
  • Although there is a big parking lot right off of Ring Road, the hike out to the wreckage takes awhile, and since it is on the beach – there isn’t coverage or protection from the elements.  It was very windy & raining while we stopped by, so any glimmer of debate about whether to rush a hike of this path was shut down for us (though many did stat their trek out to the plane while we passed by)  If the weather was nicer, this could be fit in instead of the museums listed below – time wise.

Skogafoss

  • ~ 10 minute drive from plane wreckage
  • Short walk from the parking lot to this beautiful waterfall!
  • Also, to the left of the falls, there was a farm with sheep.  Since it was lambing season, this was particularly fun to see.

Skogar Museum (technology, outdoor turf houses, & folk museum)

  • Nearby the Skogafoss parking area, these museums were definitely worth a stop! (~3 minute drive from the waterfall parking lot)
  • The rain was off and on while we visited, so spending some time indoors was a nice break

  • Touring inside the turf houses was my favorite part of the museums!

Seljalandsfoss waterfall

  • ~25 minutes from Skogar Museum
  • Yet another beautiful waterfall to check out.
  • This one is unique since you are able to walk a path BEHIND the waterfall to get some different views!  I didn’t walk that path, but the hubby did, and he really enjoyed it.

Airbnb in Selfoss

  • ~55 minutes from Seljalandsfoss
  • We had booked for 2 nights (it is a great starting place for any Golden Circle adventures!)
  • That evening we walked around town, ate pizza at Kaffi Krus, and settled in.  The local swimming pool was nearby, and there are some pretty places to walk along the water.

Pin it for later!!
