Ring Road roadtrip! 8 day itinerary – Day 7

On the last full day of your journey along Ring Road, it is time to take in the ever so famous Blue Lagoon and spend time wandering around the sights of Reykjavik.

Blue Lagoon – worth the hype?

If you plan on heading to the Blue Lagoon, be sure to book tickets early! This is especially important if you only have specific times available in your schedule, as more popular time slots can sell out quick.

9:00 am was a great time to visit in May, as it wasn’t very crowded in the beginning. Although the weather was overcast & dreary, the Blue Lagoon was still interesting to take in. Once you check in for your reservation, things are pretty well laid out. The changing rooms have lots of lockers and side spaces to get changed into your swimming suit. Separate stalls are available to shower before and after the Lagoon, and soap/shampoo is provided. Wrist bands keep track of your purchases at the bars, and there is a little hut with silica mud masks that are pretty popular and can be fun for a photo op.

3 different package options are available when purchasing your tickets. The comfort level package is the least expensive, and still offers plenty to enjoy.

Overall, it’s worth checking out the Blue Lagoon at least once. We found it very relaxing, and I’m sure I would have been curious what all the hype was about had we not just gone. HOWEVER, for a less touristy, less crowded, but still refreshing hot spring experience, plan a visit to the Mývatn Nature Baths in the northern part of Iceland. When we went, the weather was pretty brisk, so they actually discounted the tickets the day of. Chilly getting into the water… but amazing once you were soaking inside!

The Saga Museum

As you walk through the exhibits, life like figures and scenes display many of the important moments in Icelands history. I recommend renting an audio guide, which is available in several languages at the front desk. There is also a nice gift shop to look at after the exhibit.

Explore downtown Reykjavik

Be sure to take time to walk around downtown. There are plenty of sights to see, and shopping to be done! Fun bars & restaurants to choose from too! Being a crafty person, I knew I needed to find an Icelandic wool sweater, and some yarn to bring home. Walking along the harbor and checking out Harpa concert hall and the Sun Voyager sculpture are a must! The famous Hallgrimskirkja cathedral can also be spotted from many of the streets nearby.

Dinner at Icelandic Street Food was well worth the wait in line. Seating is tight, so you may end up sharing a table with another party at the restaurant, which can be fun too!

Take in a show at Harpa

Several shows looked quite entertaining, and the performances are on their own unique schedules. How to become Icelandic in 60 minutes by Bjarni Haukur Thorsson is pretty hilarious.

After the show, head back to your Airbnb to organize your bags to be ready to head out tomorrow. Try to relax & sleep if possible!
